This is a 2-page spread from book two. I don't think it really spoils anything other than now knowing there's a dinosaur in it...but I think that will be apparent from the cover.  Anyhoo, I like this shot.  Book Two moves a little quicker than Book One with a bit more action :)

This strip introduces Downey's haven behind the barn.  Inspired by outdoor sofas from Bloom County, the house is based on the house my grandpa built in Newfoundland Canada in 1950 and the barn is modeled after one of two that were adjacent to the house I had while I lived in Nova Scotia.  Both drawn from memory.(click image to enlarge)

This was my first SDCC ever.  It was very large and intimidating. My good friend - and funniest person I know - Curtis made this the other day using the papercraft characters from the Free Downloads section.  It's my first piece of "fan art" and it made me so happy I just had to share! Miami Comic Con was a grand old time! The hands-down winner of the show were the sketches below. This weekend I had a bunch of firsts.  After 2 years of living in America, i got my first car wash & finally bought a TV with antenna.  I also rearranged the studio.  There's one of my cats on the bookshelf looking ever so reminiscent of Garfield circa 1978. Today a box of bristol paper arrived(below).  With a little luck (and dedication), in a few months, this pile of paper will be Book Two.

This past weekend I was over at the Alternative Press Expo in San Francisco.  All-in-all it was a good time, while sales weren't that great(I heard the same from a lot of the attendees, so I don't feel too bad) the people who did stop by to check things out seemed genuinely interested in the book and it's upcoming release. Well...kinda.  I just finished the artwork.  It still has to be scanned, lettered and prepped for printing, so there's still quite a bit of work 'til the book is actually "done."  However, the drawing part is pretty much complete and I gotta say it feels pretty good -160 pages, scripted, penciled & inked in 18 weeks. I'm pretty proud to get to the end(kinda). I'm not sure if a lot of people get

Here's what a final inked page looks like before it gets scanned.  I do the Lettering and Tone on the computer and drop out the gray from the pencils and then a page is pretty much done!  If i had the time and money, I would print out the text and paste it down and get actual Letratone and apply it to the physical page.  I love seeing old original art that is a photo ready piece, but I don't plan

At this stage of inking, I'm going through and doing all the characters.  I find that you get into a kind of flow and don't want to stop and switch gears to do the backgrounds so I'll pile up a chunk of pages and when my hand gets tired I can take a break and do the bgs.  Later, I'll do the bgs and props with a pen or brush pen (my subtle little trick to distinguish the characters from the bgs)

Finally finished the pencils for Book One! It's kind of like wrapping principal photography on a movie though, there's still a bit of work that needs to be done.  But it's a nice milestone to hit.  I still have to ink the final 2 chapters(about 30 pages) and I usually do it in stages, like my own little assembly line, doing parts at a time.  The first stage is inking all the boxes and speech

Here are a few scribbles from my desk.  I like to rough out a composition a few times before penciling the actual panel on the nice bristol paper.  That way, I can revise and play around with different shots quickly and not feel bad about tossing an idea - cuz it was a 30second scribble :)

Here are the first 2 pages from the P&P graphic novel I'm working on. I did some experiments with grays and found a way of doing letra-tone and also decided to letter it on the computer. The computer lettering is easier to read and let's me tweak the dialogue up until the very end :) I've toyed around with P&P as a graphic novel and I really like the format.
